Durango Farmers Market is Back

The San Luis Valley Seed Exchange

This fun and informative free community event will be hosted on Saturday, April 17, and Sunday, April 18 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa in Moffat, CO. You will have the opportunity to tour their beautiful 42′ Growing Dome. (pictured below)

Event Description: Celebrate spring with us. This annual Seed Exchange connects gardeners, seed producers, and the community over agricultural education and exchange. At its roots, the event is a community seed swap. Over the years, it has grown into an event dedicated to promoting sustainability in the San Luis Valley. This year’s theme is Food Sovereignty, Storage & Security. The event will feature a speaker series and panel discussions and many local vendors, a community seed swap table, and a few food vendors. This year, we will live stream the speaker series on YouTube and Facebook Live for those who would like to attend virtually. More information: SLVSeedExchange.com.

Annual Earth Day Riverwalk Event Pagosa Springs, Colorado

The Southwest Organization for Sustainability will host the 51st Earth Day Fair on Saturday, April 24th from 11:00 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The celebration will be held at the Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership’s (GGP) Geodesic Dome Greenhouse site along the San Juan River.

It will include craft vendors, craft activities for children, and, hopefully, a presence contributed to by important community members like you. This will be an alcohol-free event, held rain or shine.

GGP Expands Renewable Energy Campus with Novel Solar Designs

The Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership, a model of sustainability, is now powering their growing domes with the sun’s energy. Support for this project was provided by La Plata Electric Association and Dobson Solar. The unique solar panel design is the latest addition to the growing Renewable Energy Campus at Centennial Park in downtown Pagosa Springs.

Geodesic greenhouse extends growing season and learning opportunities for students

“For the past eight years HMS (Hastings Middle School) has had a three-quarter-acre garden space — which is just outside the dome.” – Jayson Stoddard In 2019 a hailstorm wiped out the garden, which prompted the Hastings community to ask what it could do to help. Look what’s growing in the domes

“Recently the FS|FE Coalition took a field trip to visit Growing Spaces, a local business in Pagosa Springs that offers geodesic dome greenhouse kits for controllable, sustainable year-round gardening. Our intention with the visit was to learn about what is able to be grown locally and how we could partner to bring fresh items to clients of the local food pantry network. Once on-site, we had the chance to take a tour of 4 different size geodesic domes that house the production of fresh vegetables and fruit like kale, chard, turnips, radishes, and even some figs! Heather, our tour guide, explained to us that Growing Spaces had already pilot-tested the donation of fresh items to supplement the non-perishable food items typical in a standard food pantry box. Critical to the partnership is ensuring all the produce is kept fresh to enable the most nutritious product for community members. And that’s where the distribution center of the food pantry network comes in! The distribution center houses multiple large refrigerators to store fresh items. – FS|FE-NEWS
